What is that white thing at the root of hairs?

Examining a strand of my own hair, I find a more or less white particle attached to the root of my hair. I try to remove it with my fingernails, but I can't; it's quite sturdy. What is this substance? What is its utility?

its the root of the haiar where it grows from, kind of like a root of a plant

it's the bulb of your hair. if its white that means your hair is healthy and growing right. and yes it is quite sturdy because your hair grows out of it.

your hair folicle, it is what stands between the root of your hair in your head and the actual strand of hair, look up a diagram of a hair folicle if you want to see what it looks like
