Perms and biracial hair?

I have biracial hair.(black mother and white father) My hair is medium length and very thick, coarse, and curly. I normally flat iron it but I'm thinking about getting a perm. I want my curls to be looser and not so tight. My hair has very tight curls and I want loose, Nicole Kidmanish curls. Will a perm with big rods do this? Is there another way to acheive that look? And more importantly, if I do get a perm, will I still be able to flat iron my hair?

Before you perm, you may want to try Mixed Chicks Leave-in conditioner. It is applied to clean, wet hair, then you air dry. It will dfine the curls and loosen them a bit. Then, if you still want to go straighter, and you perm your hair, you can still use the leave in to control frizz.

As for the iron (post-perm). I think you can, just use a good deep conditioner before you do it.

Try using flexi rods or doing a straw set. Perms are very harsh and you can't go back once you do them.
