look for websites that sell dread kits. wait until your hair is maybe shoulder length? you don't want them to be too short. look for something like "lock pepper" or use a lot of wax. while its growing, just try styles with layers so it doesn't look too bad. the dreads will be better than long straight hair, but to get the dreads, you're going to have to deal with the length. don't worry, they'll turn out good if you try hard. my brother spent two days doing his own dreads. but they're amazing.
